About the Artist

Barbara Brocato - Biography

Barbara Brocato

Religious Art

I was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1949.

I knew at an early age that I would be an artist.  I majored in art in high school and college and for 30 years I painted, but I did not really enjoy the process.  I was always having to talk myself into going to my studio.

In 1995 my parish priest asked me to do a painting that he wanted to send to Pope John Paul II, who was celebrating his fiftieth anniversary as a priest. While working on the painting, an amazing thing happened! I realized I was enjoying every minute.

I began painting religious art and mosaics, but it wasn't until 2000 that I was introduced to Iconography by teacher, Philip Zimmerman (whom I still study with today).

I can't describe how privileged I feel to be painting Jesus, His Mother Mary, the saints, angels and prophets.  I may be the happiest artist in the world.
